YOSV West Side Story

Teacher’s WordsThe ensembles I teach model “living music” by asking students to connect meaningfully to the world of music around them. “Living music” does not have a set meaning. Students are asked to reflect on their personal relationship with music, what their interests are, and what they see from their perspective. Through this passage, they gain both connection to the history of generations past and the freedom of innovation - and that understanding will serve them throughout their entire lifetime.

In addition to exploring meaningfulness, orchestral students gain the opportunity to practice leadership in service, contribute to camaraderie, and experience the exultations of a shared artistic effort. Students learn to improve their educational strategies and to create good experiences for themselves through hard work. Individually and as a group, each person’s contributions to the whole is celebrated.

To that end, each ensemble has come together to prepare challenging music for their level. YOSV has also studied material of diverse cultural sources, recorded repertoire in studio, collaborated with other artists, performed world premieres, and participated in excursions and other team-building activities.
